The Second Time Around – Song Video

As promised here is the video presentation used at the CD launch of “The Second Time Around” a song written by myself, Heather Frahn and members of the Community Re-Entry Program at Flinders University as outlined in a previous post.

Here is some more information about the Musical Brainwaves project from the YouTube page…

Musical Brainwaves was a group song-writing project with members from the Community Re-Entry Program at Flinders University in 2011. Collaborating with songwriters Heather Frahn and Corey Stewart the members contributed their own song lyrics, voices and artwork expressing positive viewpoints about their lives.

The creation of the song “The Second Time Around” brought much celebration of the things that inspire life and wellbeing.

Video: Night Voices – December 7th, 2010

Late last year I had the pleasure of being the featured act for the Night Voices Open Mic which is held at The Garage Bar on Waymouth Street in Adelaide. The video below (taken by my good mate BT Cassidy) are the edited highlights from my performance.

In this video you’ll hear three songs, two of my own songs “Girl Like You” and “Back Of My Mind” which will be available on my upcoming CD release plus, a version of Spandau Ballet’s 1983 hit “Gold”

I’m really quite proud of this video considering I was sick as a dog at the time. In fact, I detuned the guitar half a semitone to give my voice a bit of a rest.

Hmmm, the things we do for our art sometimes.

Alan Watts – Life And Music

According to Zen Buddhist and interpreter of Chinese and Indian philosophies to the West, Alan Watts (1915-1973), the correlation between life and music is a closely knit and intertwining one.

Through his lectures and his vast audio archive, he was known for his ability to unravel the complexities of life for the layperson through his eloquence and humour.

A series of videos (created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone of South Park fame) were made from some of Alan’s audio recordings. The one I have included below is the one that has resonated with me the most.

It’s simply called Life and Music. Enjoy

Wish I Wrote That #1 – “My Love” (Paul McCartney)

Now that I’m back in the studio again and well and truly back in the land of the living I think it’s about time to start putting up some videos again.

I’ve already put up some videos for SongDare now its time to start putting up some Wish I Wrote That videos.

Essentially, I get inspired by the songs of others just as much as I do writing my own songs. I feel that learning and playing the songs that inspire me is the best way for me to really know the song and the songwriting lessons behind it.

I want to share with you a video of me playing “My Love” by Paul McCartney (and Wings) at the Open Mic @ The Dan last Wednesday night.

“My Love” by (from Red Rose Speedway in 1973) is one of my all time favourite love songs and it’s one of those masterpieces that I wish I had written.

I love how the melody and the chord progression blend together perfectly and while the lyrics may seem a little simplistic, they allow the melody to shine through to its fullest effect.

Enjoy…

For me, this song is quite simply an inspired work of art.

Mountain Top is the second song I played at the SCALA Open Mic Network Showcase last Thursday night (October 28th) that was put to video by Rob Childs of SCALA. This song is a few years old and I wrote soon after my band “FunkStar” broke up in 2001.

It’s always good to look at any situation from the perspective of being on top of a mountain, looking down on it all which is something I’ve been experiencing vividly of late.

This song tries to encapsulate that feeling.

Last Thursday night I performed at the SCALA Open Mic Network Showcase and I was fortunate enough to have two of my songs put to video.

This first song “(When You Gonna) Stop Tearing Me Apart” is a C. Stewart/A. Miller collaboration which deals with a different way of approaching a relationship based song by the protagonist wishes a relationship to end rather than the cliched concept of wishing an unrequited relationship to begin.

This song was inspired by the title which suggested the overall story which then suggested the lyrical content.

Sting’s Songwriting Process – A Video Insight

I stumbled across this old video of Jools Holland interviewing Sting (circa mid 80′s) recently and it gives a brilliant insight into the way that Sting gathers, processes and demos his songwriting ideas before introducing it to the rest of the Police band members

Even though the video primarily focuses on how he come up with “Message In A Bottle” (one of my all time favourite songs) there are plenty of pearls of wisdom to be had if you listen for it.

Look out for the introduction of Dennis as one of the central characters in his songwriting process.

I loved every minute of this video especially the old recording technology I mean, I used to have one of those Tascam 4 track machines (ahh, the memories of it all). I hope you enjoyed it too, let me know what you think.

SongDare #4 – I Predict A Riot (Kaiser Chiefs)

Yes, it’s another SongDare. This time I do the Kaiser Chiefs song “I Predict A Riot”

This song was requested by Joel Stibbard.

I must say, I knew very little about this song and the Kaiser Chiefs before I took on this SongDare but I’m glad I learnt this tune because it’s an absolute ripper of a song.

Embedded in the English punkiness of the tune is a serious message about a generation (or even a society) of people who have lost their way and because of this, tensions rise to breaking point. The chorus in the original make you want to shout “OI, OI, OI”

This song presented some challenges for me, especially trying to decipher the timing in the “Breathe, keep breathing” part of the song. I think I nailed it pretty well though however, I do love the darkness this song portrays through its lyrics and tonality.

The original version of this song is so very haunting and its my hope that I can retain some of that in this version.
