People who know me know that I’m very selective about what I watch on TV but for some reason The Voice is reaching out for my attention and I’m falling for its charms.

And I’ve been trying to work out why… I only just tolerate reality TV at best and I’m vehemently disgusted by it at worst but somehow The Voice seems to be a different beast.

Last year I was invited to audition for Australia’s Got Talent which was an experience that I won’t be forgetting in a hurry but as I was going through that process I had many, many people say to me that I should also consider auditioning for this new program called The Voice.

Based on my Australia’s Got Talent experience I decided not to do it but I was a little curious so I had a look on the website for the show and found out that I needed to be 35 and under to apply.

Even if I wanted to I was just too old… But I was wrong.

I don’t know what happened, maybe I was looking in the wrong place or maybe the rules had changed since I last looked on their website but there have been a number of performers on “The Voice” that are older than me, and they’ve been getting through.

My heart sank just a little bit… But I’m ok now

I liked the way they started off the pre-blind audition process by video submission only. No lining up for hours and hours and no waiting for your number to be called which was what I went through auditioning for Australia’s Got Talent.

It was a very smart use of social media on their part.

For me The Voice seems to have an air of integrity about it. There’s no sensationalist destruction of obviously bad performers for the pure entertainment of the masses. It’s a program that stays true to finding the best voice possible regardless of aesthetics.

I suppose I really like The Voice because (at the moment) it’s the opposite to its predecessors Australian Idol, X Factor and Australia’s Got Talent.

If it goes for a second season (and I think its ratings so far will guarantee that) I reckon I’ll give it a go.

But we’ll wait and see…
